[UPDATE] 17/06/2020: Fery Kombo and six other peaceful protesters have been sentenced to 10 - 11 months in prison. Even though this sentence is lighter than what they were initially charged with, they should not have been arrested in the first place! Their struggle is not over yet. Sign this petition and continue to demand the unconditional release of Papuan prisoners of conscience.

How would you feel if you were called a "monkey", then got arrested for defending yourself?

This is what happened to Fery Kombo. He is now facing up to 10 years in prison just for voicing his concerns! But you can help us to free Fery and his fellow Papuans.

Everyone has the right to express their opinion peacefully, including Papuans.

Fery is a student from Papua and was the head of the student body at Cendrawasih University. On 16 August 2019, he received bad news from Surabaya. Members of the Indonesian military and mass organisations surrounded a Papuan dormitory and accused the students of dropping the Indonesian flag into a ditch in front of the building. The dormitory was damaged and the students were hurled with racial slurs.

Fery had to do something. He couldn’t just sit by and do nothing as his Papuan peers were being intimidated. He gathered his friends and organised a peaceful protest last year in Jayapura.

The students’ demands to the government were simple: Stop racism against Papuans, arrest the perpetrators, and guarantee the security and protection of Papuan students across Indonesia.

However, Fery and many others were arrested and are now facing 5-17 years in prison for treason!

But the injustice doesn’t stop there. The perpetrators who intimidated the Papuan students were only sentenced to 5-7 months in prison!

Why are those fighting against racism being charged and imprisoned?

Fery is only one of 44 prisoners of conscience from Papua who are currently threatened by severe punishment just for expressing their opinions peacefully.

The charges against Fery and his peers are a clear violation of freedom of expression.

Help us fight for justice and urge:

  1. The Jayapura District Court to unconditionally release the Papuan prisoners of conscience from all charges.

  2. The President of the Republic of Indonesia to ensure that all Papuan prisoners of conscience are immediately and unconditionally released.
